S80 Torque Converter Issues
Summary of the thread
A 2011 Volvo S80 diesel with 175,000 km is experiencing significant issues, including a check engine light, transmission indicator lights, gearbox slipping, and occasional grinding noises. The problem is suspected to be a defective torque converter lock-up clutch, as indicated by diagnostic codes. The symptoms, such as performance drop and sluggishness, align with torque converter failure. The suggested solution is to have the torque converter replaced, with a professional diagnosis recommended to confirm the issue.

Yeah, definitely a performance drop. Feels sluggish, especially uphill. If it was the torque converter on your S80, what was the damage? Was that definitely the issue?

Sounds like the converter, alright. Yes, the garage confirmed it was the torque converter. You should get it properly diagnosed, though, just to be sure. But the symptoms match pretty closely. I ended up having to get mine replaced. Just go to the workshop and ask them for a quote.

Thanks! Taking it to a shop next week. Looks like it’s going to be expensive - they are estimating 2120€ for the repair, but at least I have a better idea of what I’m looking at. Cheers for your help!

Sounds rough. I had something similar happen on my S80 (petrol, though). The slipping and grinding sounds familiar. Did you notice any performance drop before this all started? It could point to converter failure.
