S80 Transmission Emergency Mode
Summary of the thread
A 2000 Volvo S80 experienced transmission issues, including being stuck in emergency mode, rough shifting, and grinding noises, accompanied by a "radiator oil pressure defective" error. The problem was traced to a faulty coolant pressure sensor and a corroded connector. Replacing these components and performing a system flush resolved the issue, restoring smooth transmission operation.

Thanks for the suggestion! I hadn't considered the sensor itself. If the sensor is faulty, could that really put the transmission in emergency mode? Or will the pressure or temperature in the system be too high?

Yes, in my case, a faulty sensor triggered limp mode. I would suggest testing the sensor and checking for coolant leaks. However, since you are mentioning those grinding noises, I recommend having a workshop take a look at it.

Thanks for your help! The workshop confirmed it was indeed the coolant pressure sensor and a corroded connector. Replacing both, as well as doing a flush, solved the problem, and I'm only out 95€. The transmission is shifting smoothly again.

I had a similar experience with my S80. Was the radiator coolant pressure sensor checked? A defective sensor can cause transmission issues. Does the cooling fan run continuously?
