S90 Hybrid starting issue
Summary of the thread
A 2018 Volvo S90 hybrid with 80,000 km is experiencing starting issues and a check engine light, alongside a clunky gearbox. The problem may be linked to a defective control unit affecting the transmission's parking position, even if the gear indicator appears normal. It is recommended to have the car scanned for error codes and repaired at a workshop, which could cost around 1000€.

The gear indicator seems normal, but I haven't scanned for codes myself. I'm not sure how to do that. Could the parking position be defective even if the indicator looks okay?

Yes, it's possible. A defective control unit can cause the issues you're describing, leading to transmission failure and errors related to the parking position even if the indicator seems fine. Seeing as the engine doesn't start and the gearbox shifts uncleanly, I expect error codes like these are stored in the error memory. I would recommend taking it to a trusted workshop; the repair may cost around 1000€.

Thanks for the advice. I took it to the shop, and they confirmed it was a faulty control unit related to the transmission parking position, just as you suspected. Appreciate your help!

Those symptoms sound related. Does the gear indicator on the dash light up correctly when you shift into Park? Have you had the car scanned for error codes?
