Cable connection, huh? I hadn't really thought about that. Is it a huge job to get in there and check it? What exactly am I looking for – a loose connector, a broken wire?

Accessing the cable connection usually involves removing the airbag and the steering wheel itself, which can be a bit risky if you're not familiar with the process due to the airbag deployment risk. I'd advise against fiddling with it, if you don't know what you are doing. I suggest you go to your workshop and get it checked out. In my case, it turned out to be a defective cable within the steering wheel itself. The mechanic replaced the faulty cable, and everything was back to normal.

Thanks so much for the advice! I took it to the workshop, and you were spot on. Turns out, it was indeed a defective cable connection in the steering wheel. They replaced it (cost me about 95€), and now everything is working perfectly again. Really appreciate the help!

Interesting. I actually had a similar problem with my 2018 BMW 5 series a while back. Same symptoms: multifunction steering wheel completely dead, error code stored. Did you check the cable connection inside the steering wheel or at the steering column? I found that that's a pretty common failure point. Is it possible that that's the culprit?
