S90 Power Steering Issue

I've got a 2018 Volvo S90 with a gasoline engine. Recently, I've had a vibrating/shaking steering wheel, an overall spongy feel to the handling, and an error message. Steering also requires more effort, almost as if the power steering is failing intermittently. Fluid levels are fine. The car has 90891 km on the clock. Could a defective cable or a faulty plug connection be the issue?

Summary of the thread

A 2018 Volvo S90 is experiencing a vibrating steering wheel, spongy handling, and increased steering effort, suggesting intermittent power steering failure. Fluid levels are normal, indicating the issue might be electrical. A possible cause could be a defective cable or faulty plug connection, particularly related to the electric power steering module. Consulting a qualified technician to inspect these connections is recommended for a potential resolution.

I had a similar issue with my 2019 Jaguar XF. Steering felt like wrestling an alligator; sometimes fine, sometimes a real struggle. The error memory also stored a steering-related fault. It turned out to be a corroded connector on the steering column. Think of it like a loose wire on a lamp – sometimes it works, sometimes it flickers. Has the wheel alignment been checked?

Thanks! The alligator analogy certainly paints a vivid picture! Could you elaborate on which connector was affected in your Jaguar? And was the wheel alignment significantly off? I'm trying to gather as much information as possible before I take it in.

Unfortunately, I cannot recall the precise connector, as the workshop identified and rectified the problem. However, the technician mentioned it was related to the electric power steering module. As for the wheel alignment, it was slightly off, but they believed the connector was the primary cause of the issue. I would strongly advise consulting a qualified technician, as a defective cable or plug connection can indeed cause such symptoms. My repair was a simple fix and cost me 95€ at the shop. Do get it checked out quickly!

I appreciate you sharing your experience. It has provided me with a clearer direction. I will schedule an appointment with a trusted mechanic and specifically request they examine the connectors associated with the electric power steering module, as you suggested. Thanks again!
