Safrane diesel LMM issue

I've got a 1999 Renault Safrane diesel with only 40163 km on the clock. Recently, fuel consumption has gone up, the engine sometimes stalls at idle, and the check engine light is on. Plus, there's a bit of smoke when I accelerate. Suspect it might be the mass air flow meter (LMM) causing the trouble. Anyone else experienced something similar?

Yep, sounds familiar. I had similar symptoms in my Safrane a while back. Higher fuel consumption, rough idling, and the check engine light taunting me. Did you notice any performance decline, especially when accelerating? It could very well be the LMM. Have you checked the air intake for any obvious obstructions?

Thanks for the quick reply! Yes, I definitely feel a loss of power when accelerating. I checked the air intake briefly, didn't spot anything obvious, but I'll take a closer look. When your Safrane had these issues, what exactly was the problem? Was it the LMM sensor itself?

In my case, it was indeed the mass air flow sensor. After replacing it, all those problems disappeared. Given your symptoms and the error light, it's highly probable that yours is also faulty. If you lack experience with these things, I would recommend taking it to a trustworthy workshop.

Appreciate the confirmation and advice! Took it to the workshop as suggested, and it was indeed the LMM. Repair, including parts and labor, came to 365€. Runs like new now!
