Safrane diesel power loss and hissing sound
Summary of the thread
A 1999 Renault Safrane diesel is experiencing power loss, rough engine performance, jerking during acceleration, a loud hissing sound from the engine bay, and increased fuel consumption. The suspected cause is an issue with the intake manifold flap control. A similar case involved a defective switch intake manifold control, which required replacement. A smoke test is recommended to identify any leaks in the intake system.

Thanks! Haven't checked for leaks specifically, but the manifold flap actuator looked okay. No engine light, so no codes. Where was the leak on yours?

No engine light is a pain! Mine didn't throw a code until it was really bad. Couldn't pinpoint the leak myself. Took it to a workshop, and they diagnosed a defective switch intake manifold control. Needed a new part, cost around 465€. Smoke test is your best bet; that will show any intake system leaks.

Thanks for the advice. I suspected as much. Looks like a workshop visit is in order. I'll post the diagnosis when I have it. Cheers!

Sounds like what happened to my Safrane. Hissing, jerking, the whole thing! Checked the intake system for leaks or blockages? Hissing suggests a leak. Could be the manifold flap actuator. Throwing any engine codes?
