Safrane engine power loss and smoke
Summary of the thread
A 1999 Renault Safrane is experiencing engine power loss, a check engine light, and smoke during acceleration. These symptoms could be caused by a faulty crankcase ventilation valve. It is suggested to check for oily residue around the engine as a sign of this issue. Given the complexity and potential for other underlying problems, a professional diagnostic is recommended to accurately identify and resolve the issue.

I haven't really checked for oily residue, but the mileage is at 130122 km. Is it difficult to check the crankcase ventilation valve myself?

At that mileage, it's definitely a possibility. Checking it yourself depends on your mechanical skills. Honestly, given the emissions light and smoke, it might be best to get it diagnosed professionally. A proper diagnostic will pinpoint the problem. I ended up paying around 360€ for the repair back then.

Thanks for the info. I'll take it to a workshop to get it checked out. Sounds like that's the safest bet.

Sounds plausible. I had similar issues on my old Laguna, and a faulty ventilation valve was the culprit. Have you noticed any oily residue around the engine? That's often a sign of a leak related to crankcase ventilation issues. Also, what's the mileage?
