Safrane exhaust back pressure sensor
Summary of the thread
The 2000 Renault Safrane is experiencing issues with the exhaust back pressure sensor, leading to a warning light, smoke during acceleration, and a non-functioning DPF regeneration. The problem is suspected to be a defective sensor, confirmed by a diagnostic scan. The suggested solution is to replace the faulty sensor, and a visit to the workshop confirmed this diagnosis, with the repair expected to resolve the emissions issues.

Thanks for the quick reply! Yeah, I scanned it and it's throwing a code specifically for the exhaust back pressure sensor – saying it's malfunctioning. So, if you had the same symptoms, did replacing the EGR fix it entirely, or did you have to chase down other issues related to the vehicle emissions as well?

Replacing the EGR valve fixed my issue, yes! But with these emission-related problems, it's always a good idea to get a proper diagnosis. Especially with the DPF not regenerating, there might be other underlying problems causing the sensor to fail in the first place, or that were caused by the sensor failing. I'd suggest taking it to a workshop to be 100% sure.

Thanks a bunch! I really appreciate the advice. I took it to the shop and you were right, they confirmed it was indeed the exhaust back pressure sensor! Repair cost including parts and labor came out to about 245€. Hopefully, this solves all the vehicle emissions issues.

Sounds familiar! I had a similar issue with my 2012 Opel Insignia, although it was the EGR valve causing the problems back then. I remember dealing with vehicle emissions is always a mess. Was the car scanned? What error codes are you getting? A faulty sensor can definitely cause those symptoms (smoke, no DPF regeneration, warning light). It messes up the whole emission control system.
