Safrane Fuel Pressure Sensor Issue

I'm having a problem with my 2000 Renault Safrane, it has a gasoline engine. It's got about 105737 km on the clock. The check engine light keeps coming on, and the engine sometimes stalls when I'm idling. Also, it feels like the car doesn't have as much power as it used to. I had it checked and the computer says the rail pressure sensor signal is faulty. Could a bad pressure sensor really cause all these problems?

Summary of the thread

A 2000 Renault Safrane with a gasoline engine exhibited issues such as the check engine light turning on, stalling at idle, and reduced power. The diagnostic code P0190 indicated a faulty fuel rail pressure sensor, which can cause these symptoms by providing inaccurate fuel pressure data to the engine control unit. Replacing the defective sensor resolved the problems, restoring the vehicle's performance.

I experienced a similar issue with my Safrane, and I understand your frustration. The symptoms you describe – check engine light, stalling at idle, and reduced power – are indeed indicative of a potential problem with the fuel pressure sensor. When this sensor malfunctions, the engine control unit (ECU) receives inaccurate information about the fuel pressure in the rail. Consequently, the ECU may miscalculate the correct fuel-air mixture, leading to suboptimal engine performance and the issues you've outlined. Was there any specific diagnostic code that came up during the check?

Yes, the diagnostic code was P0190, which I think confirms it's the fuel rail pressure sensor. Did replacing the sensor fix problems in your case?

Affirmative, the P0190 code strongly suggests a fault within the fuel pressure sensor circuit. In my experience, replacing the sensor rectified the issues entirely. However, while it is plausible to attempt the replacement yourself, I would suggest you consult a workshop. The replacement requires attention to detail to prevent fuel leaks. Furthermore, the new sensor must be properly calibrated to ensure the engine runs optimally.

I took it to the workshop, and they confirmed the sensor was defective. They replaced it, and everything seems to be running smoothly now. The total repair cost was around 240€. Hopefully, this will help anyone else with a similar problem.
