Safrane Idle Air Control Problems
Summary of the thread
A 2000 Renault Safrane with a gasoline engine is experiencing idle air control problems, indicated by a check engine light and stalling at idle. The suspected cause is a faulty idle air control (IAC) valve, potentially due to contamination. A suggestion is made to check for carbon buildup in the intake manifold and throttle body, which could restrict airflow and affect the IAC valve's function. The issue is resolved by cleaning the intake and replacing the IAC valve, restoring the car's performance.

Interesting! Thanks for the tip. I haven't specifically checked the intake manifold. How difficult was it to clean on your Opel? Did you need any special tools or cleaners? I'm reasonably handy, but I don't want to screw anything up royally.

Cleaning the intake wasn't particularly difficult on the Omega, but it was definitely a messy job. I used throttle body cleaner and a toothbrush to scrub away the gunk. However, given the symptoms and error codes you are experiencing, and the fact that the Safrane is a different car than my old Omega, I would strongly suggest consulting a qualified mechanic. It could be more complex than just a dirty intake, and you wouldn't want to risk causing further damage. They can properly diagnose the issue and replace the IAC valve if necessary.

You were spot on! Took it to the shop, and they confirmed the intake was indeed heavily contaminated, gunking up the IAC valve. They cleaned everything, replaced the valve, and it's running like a champ again. Cost me 425€, but well worth it for the peace of mind. Thanks again for the advice!

I had similar issues with my old Opel Omega. The engine would randomly cut out at traffic lights, and the diagnostics pointed towards issues with the idle control system. The likely culprit, I found, was a heavily contaminated intake manifold and throttle body. This contamination restricts the airflow, messing with the IAC valve's ability to properly regulate the idle speed. Have you checked for excessive carbon buildup in those areas?
