Safrane Immobilizer Problem
Summary of the thread
A 2000 Renault Safrane diesel is experiencing immobilizer issues, causing it to start briefly and then stall. Diagnostic scans suggest the immobilizer is at fault, possibly due to incorrect key programming. The problem was resolved by reprogramming the key at a workshop with Renault diagnostic tools, leading to the engine starting perfectly.

Thanks. My Safrane doesn't have a remote start or aftermarket anti-theft. Do you remember if the Vectra issue was fixed by reprogramming the key, or something more? Trying to understand the possible repair scope before I visit a workshop.

The Vectra needed a new key and the immobilizer module had to be reprogrammed. Before you do that, visit a workshop with Renault diagnostic tools and key programming equipment. They can read the error codes and diagnose if the key needs reprogramming or if there is another fault in the immobilizer system or ignition control.

Thanks for the advice. I took the Safrane to a workshop with Renault diagnostic tools. The key programming was the problem. Reprogramming, costing 45€, fixed it completely. The engine now starts perfectly. I appreciate the guidance!

I had a similar issue with my old Opel Vectra. Symptoms were almost identical: engine starting then cutting out. Turned out to be a problem with the transponder in the key not being properly recognized by the immobilizer. Does the Safrane have a remote start or aftermarket anti-theft system installed? Those can sometimes interfere with the factory immobilizer.
