Safrane oil pressure warning

I'm facing a serious issue with my 1999 Renault Safrane 2.2 diesel. The oil pressure warning lamp keeps lighting up, accompanied by some nasty mechanical noises from the engine. It has 121240 km on the clock. I've checked the oil level, and it's fine. I even replaced the oil filter, suspecting it might be clogged, but the problem persists. Could it be the oil pressure sensor or something more serious?

Sounds familiar. I had a similar issue with my Safrane a while back. Same symptoms: oil pressure light and engine noises. Did you check the oil viscosity, perhaps it is too thin?

Thanks for the quick reply. I haven't checked the oil viscosity specifically, but I did use the recommended grade during my last oil change. Could a faulty oil pressure gauge be the culprit, or is it more likely a mechanical problem like a failing oil pump?

In my case, it turned out to be a defect in the oil pump itself. Seeing as you've already checked the oil and filter, and the problem persists, I'd recommend getting it checked at a workshop. Those noises don't sound good, better safe than sorry!

Thanks a lot for the advice! I took it to a workshop, and you were spot on – it was indeed the oil pump. The total repair cost came to 755€. Hopefully, this sorts it out for good.
