Safrane Overheating Thermostat
Summary of the thread
The 1999 Renault Safrane diesel is experiencing overheating and slow warm-up, indicating a potential thermostat issue. While the thermostat is suspected, other possible causes like coolant leaks, a failing water pump, or a faulty temperature sensor are considered. The water pump was recently replaced, and no leaks are found, reinforcing the likelihood of a thermostat problem. The recommended solution is to replace the thermostat, preferably at a workshop to ensure proper handling.

Thanks for the quick reply. I've checked for coolant leaks and can't see any. The water pump was changed about 40,000 km ago as part of servicing. Is there a good way to test the temperature sensor, or would a resistance check be enough?

Okay, no leaks and a fairly new water pump kinda points back to the thermostat. Resistance checks on the temperature sensor can be tricky. Honestly, with those symptoms, and given the age, you're probably better off just getting the thermostat replaced. Best get it done at a workshop, save yourself the hassle.

Thanks for the advice. I think you're right, thermostat it is. I'll book it in with my mechanic. I reckon it'll be around 350€.

Sounds like a thermostat issue! Overheating and slow warm-up are classic signs. But, just to be sure, have you checked for any coolant leaks? And when was the water pump last replaced? A failing water pump could also contribute to these symptoms. Also, might be worth checking the temperature sensor is working properly, just in case it's a false alarm.
