Safrane Temperature Gauge Check Engine Light
Summary of the thread
A 2000 Renault Safrane exhibited issues with an inaccurate temperature gauge, an illuminated check engine light, and delayed engine warm-up. The initial suspicion was a restricted cooling grille, which could affect airflow and thermal management. A blocked grille can cause abnormal temperature readings, potentially triggering the check engine light. A broken fuse related to the cooling system was identified and replaced, resolving the issue.

Thanks for the info. The grille looks clear at first glance, but I'll take a closer look. If it is blocked, could that really trigger the check engine light? And is there a fuse involved, like I read somewhere?

Indeed, a blocked grille can indirectly trigger the check engine light. The engine control unit (ECU) monitors various parameters, including engine temperature. If the ECU detects abnormal temperature readings, it may interpret this as a malfunction and illuminate the check engine light. Regarding a fuse, some vehicles do have fuses associated with the cooling fan or radiator shutter systems, which could be relevant if your Safrane is equipped with such features. However, in the case of a simple obstruction, the check engine light is more likely due to the temperature anomaly itself. Given the symptoms, it may be prudent to consult a qualified technician for a comprehensive diagnosis. A fault code scan could provide valuable insights.

Okay, thanks for your help! I took it to a shop and they found a broken fuse. Replaced it and cleared the code and it's all good. Cost me 52€. All sorted!

It is plausible that a restricted cooling grille is contributing to the symptoms you have described. Insufficient airflow across the radiator can certainly impact thermal management. The erroneous temperature readings and prolonged warm-up time are consistent with such a restriction. I had a similar situation with my old Opel Vectra; a plastic bag had become lodged in the grille, causing overheating issues. Consider inspecting the grille thoroughly for any obstructions.
