Safrane transmission issues

Hi, I'm having a strange issue with my 1999 Renault Safrane 2.2 diesel (111230 km). The transmission indicator light comes on, then the check engine light. It's also gone into emergency mode, the automatic transmission isn't shifting right, feels like it's slipping and shifting uncleanly. Sometimes there are grinding noises when shifting. I checked the error memory and it points to a radiator oil pressure issue. Could a defective cable or plug connection of the component actually cause all this? Anyone experienced something similar? I'm a bit lost where to start.

Sounds familiar! I had a similar problem with my old Opel Vectra. Different make, I know, but it turned out to be related to the oil cooler and coolant mixing due to a tiny leak somewhere in the radiator. The sensors went haywire, and the gearbox was acting up in a similar way. Have you checked for any coolant leaks or unusual oil levels?

Thanks for the tip! I haven't specifically looked for coolant leaks inside the oil, just checked the coolant level and it seemed okay. Where exactly should I be looking for this mixing? Is there a specific pressure gauge I should be monitoring?

Well, on my Vectra, the mechanic found traces of coolant in the transmission fluid. It's not always obvious, but that's what messed up the pressure and caused the shifting issues. Honestly, with the symptoms you're describing and that error code, I'd take it to a workshop. They'll be able to pressure test the system and pinpoint the leak. It's better than chasing ghosts and potentially causing more damage.

Okay, I appreciate the advice. I took it to a local shop and you were spot on! Turned out to be a faulty cable connection. They replaced the cable, cleared the codes, and it seems to be shifting smoothly again. Cost me 95€, which I'm more than happy to pay. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!
