Sail power steering vibration

I'm having a headache with my 2018 Chevrolet Sail, gasoline engine. I've racked up 188983 km on it, and lately, the power steering has been acting up. The steering wheel vibrates and shakes, the handling feels spongy, and I even got an error code. Now it feels like I'm wrestling a bear every time I try to steer; the power steering feels like it's giving up on me. I checked the hydraulic fluid, and it seems okay. I even gave the pressure hose a look, but nothing seems obviously wrong. Could it be something with the steering column or maybe even the electric steering components? Any ideas?

Summary of the thread

The 2018 Chevrolet Sail's power steering issue involves a vibrating and shaking steering wheel, with handling feeling spongy and an error code appearing. Initial checks of hydraulic fluid and pressure hose showed no obvious problems, leading to suspicion of issues with the steering column or electric steering components. A suggestion to inspect cable and plug connections to the power steering components revealed a defective connection, which was confirmed and repaired at a workshop, resolving the problem without needing to replace the entire power steering system.

I had a similar problem with my Chevrolet Sail. Felt like driving a tank, didn't it? My issue also started with a vibrating steering wheel and progressively got worse. Have you checked the cable and plug connections to the power steering components? A loose or corroded connection can cause all sorts of weird issues. It's like a loose wire on a lamp – sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

Interesting! Thanks for the tip. Which cable and plug connections are you referring to specifically? Is there a particular one that's more prone to causing this kind of trouble?

I'm not a mechanic, but in my case, it turned out to be a defective plug connection. Honestly, diagnosing it myself was tricky. The symptoms were so similar to a failing power steering pump that I almost went down that road. If you're not comfortable digging in too deep, I would highly recommend taking it to a workshop. They can properly diagnose it and prevent you from replacing unnecessary parts. It could save you money in the long run.

Thanks so much for the advice! You were spot on. I took it to the workshop, and it turned out to be a defective cable or plug connection, just like you suggested. The repair cost me around 95€, which is a lot better than replacing the whole power steering system! I really appreciate your help; it saved me a ton of time and money.
