Santa Fe gear shift indicator failure

I'm having a serious issue with my 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe (gasoline engine). It has about 130k km on it. The gear shift indicator on the dashboard is completely dead. I can't see what gear I'm in, and it's causing problems. I'm experiencing difficulties engaging gears, the transmission is shifting erratically, sometimes slipping or shifting uncleanly, and there are even grinding noises when I try to shift. I scanned for error codes, and there's something stored in the error memory related to the transmission. I'm suspecting a faulty control unit. Has anyone experienced something similar? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Summary of the thread

The 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe is experiencing a gear shift indicator failure, leading to erratic transmission behavior, including slipping, unclean shifts, and grinding noises. The issue began with a flickering indicator and escalated to a complete failure, accompanied by error codes related to the transmission. A faulty control unit is suspected as the cause. The recommended solution is to have the vehicle diagnosed and repaired by a professional workshop to prevent further damage.

Whoa, that sounds rough! I had something eerily similar happen with my Santa Fe, though thankfully not quite as bad. My gear indicator went haywire and the shifting got super clunky. It felt like the car was trying to decide what gear it wanted to be in. Like a toddler trying to dress themselves - hilarious, but not what you want in your car. Did it start happening gradually or did it just suddenly appear?

Thanks for the quick response! It started gradually. First, the gear indicator would flicker occasionally, then it became more frequent, and finally, it just died completely. The shifting issues followed shortly after. Was your issue the same, and if so, how did you resolve it? Was it indeed the control unit?

Yep, sounds almost identical to what I went through, only mine didn't get as severe as yours seems to be. Given that yours is now throwing error codes and the shifting is all over the place, I'd say you're probably right about the control unit. Honestly, with those symptoms, I wouldn't mess around with it too much. Get it to a trusted workshop ASAP before you do any more damage to the transmission. It could turn into a very expensive repair if you wait too long.

Thanks a lot for sharing your experience! I appreciate the advice. I'll definitely take it to a workshop and have them diagnose the control unit. Knowing that someone else had a similar issue makes me feel a bit better. I will share the resolution once I get it sorted, hopefully it won't cost me an arm and a leg!
