SantaFe Battery Sensor Issue
Summary of the thread
A 2000 Hyundai SantaFe diesel with 127,027 km is experiencing weak starts and flickering lights, leading to suspicion of a faulty battery sensor. This issue is not uncommon in SantaFe models. To diagnose, checking voltage readings is suggested, with normal readings being around 12.6 volts when the engine is off and between 13.7 and 14.7 volts when running. Ultimately, a workshop visit confirmed the faulty sensor, which was replaced, resolving the issue.

Thanks for the quick reply! I haven't checked the voltage readings yet, to be honest. Where exactly is the battery sensor located on the SantaFe? And what voltage readings should I be looking for as 'normal'?

The battery sensor is usually attached to the negative terminal of the battery. As for voltage, with the engine off, you should see around 12.6 volts. When running, it should be between 13.7 and 14.7 volts. If it's significantly lower, that could confirm your suspicions. Honestly, with those symptoms, a workshop visit might be best. They can do a proper diagnostic.

Appreciate the advice! I took it to a workshop and, indeed, the battery sensor was faulty. They replaced it, and the total cost was 315€. Everything's working perfectly now. Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction!

I've got a SantaFe too, and I had similar problems a while back. Weak starts and flickering lights can definitely point to a faulty battery sensor. Have you checked the voltage readings? What do they look like when the engine is running versus when it's off?
