SantaFe diesel engine running rich
Summary of the thread
The 2004 Hyundai SantaFe diesel is experiencing issues with running rich, leading to a drop in power, rough running, increased fuel consumption, and a check engine light. Possible causes include defective injection valves or injectors. A suggestion was made to check for intake manifold leaks, but ultimately, the problem was diagnosed as faulty fuel injectors, which required professional repair.

Thanks for the quick reply! I haven't really paid attention to whether it's worse when cold, but I'll definitely check that tomorrow morning. As for the intake manifold, no I haven't checked it yet. Where exactly should I be looking for leaks? I am a complete novice when it comes to car repairs.

Well, on mine, the symptoms got progressively worse, so it was hard to pinpoint a specific trigger. I'm not a mechanic, so I'm a bit limited in what I can suggest. Honestly, with those symptoms, especially the jerking and check engine light, it might be best to get it checked out by a workshop. It sounds like a fuel delivery issue, which can be tricky to diagnose without the right equipment. It could be many things from the injectors to the catalytic converter.

Thanks a lot for your advice! I was hoping it would be something simple, but it sounds like I'm in over my head. I'll take it to a workshop and see what they say. Turns out, it was the fuel injectors and it cost me 515€ to get it repaired.

I had something similar happen with my SantaFe. Reduced power, rough running, and terrible fuel economy sound familiar. Did you notice any difference in how it runs when the engine is cold versus when it's warmed up? Also, have you checked the intake manifold for any leaks? That can sometimes cause similar problems.
