SantaFe rough cold starting
Summary of the thread
A 2009 Hyundai SantaFe diesel is experiencing rough running during cold starts, an error code, and increased fuel consumption. The suspected cause is a faulty PTC heater, which is an electric auxiliary heater. A similar case confirmed that a defective PTC heater can lead to these issues, and the recommended solution is to have it checked and possibly replaced by a professional.

Thanks for the quick reply! When you say similar, do you mean all the same symptoms? Rough running on cold starts, error codes, and increased fuel consumption? And if it was the PTC heater, what was the fix?

Yes, all of the above. The rough running was the most noticeable. I took it to a workshop, and they diagnosed a faulty PTC heater. Considering the symptoms and the potential impact on fuel economy, I would recommend getting it checked by a professional. They quoted me around 350€ for the repair.

Okay, that's good to know. I appreciate the confirmation. Sounds like I'll be heading to the workshop to get the heating element checked out and probably replaced. Thanks for your help!

Interesting. I also own a SantaFe with a diesel engine, and had something similar happen last winter. Did you check the blower motor and heating element? Is the heat not working at all, or is it just weak until the engine warms up? An electrical fault in the heating system could definitely cause those symptoms, especially the poor running and increased fuel consumption.
