Santro Steering Problems

I've got a 2019 Hyundai Santro with a gasoline engine and about 25888 km on the clock. Recently, I've been experiencing some concerning issues with the steering. It feels like I need to put in a lot more effort to turn the wheel, almost as if the power steering is failing intermittently. Additionally, there's a noticeable vibration or shaking in the steering wheel, especially at lower speeds. I've checked the tire pressure and visually inspected the suspension components, but nothing seems obviously out of place. Could this be related to alignment problems or perhaps a faulty steering angle sensor?

Summary of the thread

A 2019 Hyundai Santro owner reported steering issues, including increased effort to turn the wheel and vibrations at lower speeds. Possible causes discussed included alignment problems or a faulty steering angle sensor. It was suggested that the issue likely stemmed from the sensor's faulty coding, requiring specialized diagnostic tools for confirmation and repair. The owner later confirmed that the workshop identified and fixed the faulty steering angle sensor, resolving the problem.

Sounds like you might be on the right track with the steering angle sensor. The symptoms you're describing – increased steering effort and vibrations – are classic signs of a potential issue there. It's like when your computer's mouse cursor starts acting erratically; sometimes it's just a driver issue, other times the sensor itself is wonky. Have you had any recent wheel alignment work done? A misaligned wheel can sometimes throw off the sensor readings. Also, has the car had any work done lately that might have required disconnecting the battery? Sometimes that can affect the sensor's calibration.

Thanks for the quick response! No, I haven't had any wheel alignment done recently, and the battery hasn't been disconnected either. If it is the steering angle sensor, is there anything I can check myself before taking it to a workshop? Or is it something that requires specialized tools and software to diagnose and fix?

Okay, given that you haven't had alignment issues or battery work recently, it does point more towards the sensor itself or its coding. Unfortunately, diagnosing and recalibrating a steering angle sensor usually requires specialized diagnostic equipment and software that most home mechanics wouldn't have. It's a bit like trying to diagnose a complex engine problem without an OBD2 scanner – you might guess, but you won't really know. It's very likely the coding of the sensor is faulty. My advice would be to take it to a trusted workshop. They'll be able to properly diagnose the issue and recalibrate the sensor, or replace it if necessary.

Thanks for the advice! I took it to the workshop, and they confirmed it was indeed the steering angle sensor. They said the coding was faulty. The total repair cost was 195€. Everything is working fine now. Appreciate the help!
