Scenic oil pressure warning

Hi, I'm having some trouble with my 2000 Renault Scenic, it's a diesel. Recently, the oil pressure warning lamp lights up and a warning light appeared in the speedometer. It has 160945 km on the clock. I checked the oil level, and it looks alright, but it seems kinda sludgy. Could this be contamination of the engine oil? I'm worried about potential engine damage.

I also own a Scenic, and experienced something similar. How long has it been since your last oil change? Has the oil filter been changed recently? Oil sludge can definitely cause those symptoms, especially if the maintenance interval was exceeded. Have you ever used any oil additives?

Thanks for the quick response! It's been a while since the last oil change, longer than it should have been. I can't recall when the filter was last changed either. I have never used any additives. Could that be the main cause of the issue?

Yes, exceeding the maintenance interval is the likely culprit. The oil degrades over time, especially in diesel engines, and forms sludge. The oil filter might be clogged as well, reducing oil pressure. I'd strongly recommend going to a workshop and getting a proper oil change with a new filter ASAP. Continuing to drive like this could seriously damage your engine.

Thanks for the advice! I took it to the workshop, and you were spot on. They said the oil was severely contaminated due to exceeding the maintenance interval. They did an oil change, replaced the filter, and flushed the engine. Cost me 165€, but hopefully, it will prevent more serious damage. Lesson learned: stick to the maintenance schedule!
