Seat Altea Automatic Transmission Problems

My 2008 Seat Altea with a diesel engine has a gear selection display malfunction in the speedometer. It is not possible to engage the gears and there's implausible shifting behavior of the automatic transmission. Also, the gearbox slips and shifts uncleanly, and there are grinding noises when shifting gears. There's an error stored in the error memory. I suspect a defective control unit. Has anyone seen this before?

I might know something about this. I also had some weird problems with the gear indicator and the shift knob. It was showing the wrong gear sometimes, or no gear at all! By gear indicator, you mean the electronic display in the instrument panel, right? When this happened, it also affected the automatic transmission and it would shift very roughly. I hope this helps.

Yes, the electronic display in the instrument panel. Unclean shifting is also an issue, as well as grinding noises. Did you also get any errors in the error memory?

Yes, it sounds like the same problem! My mechanic told me that it was a common issue with the automotive electronics in some Alteas. You should definitely take it to a workshop to get it checked. It could be the control unit, like you said.

The control unit was indeed the problem, as suspected. Replacement cost was 1000€.
