Seat Altea Diesel Engine Oil Pressure Problem

I'm gutted. My 2011 Seat Altea, diesel engine, with 62248 km on the clock, has suddenly developed a nasty problem. The oil pressure warning lamp keeps lighting up, and there's a horrible loud mechanical noise coming from the engine. It sounds like low oil pressure, right? I'm fearing the worst, could it be oil pump failure? What are the chances it might be something else, like dodgy engine bearings, or perhaps a blocked oil filter? I am really worried about this. Any thoughts?

Whoa, that doesn't sound good at all! I drive an Altea as well, and I actually had something similar happen to me a while back. Was the oil pressure gauge acting funny beforehand? Did you happen to notice any oil leakage anywhere?

Funnily enough, the oil pressure gauge seemed fine until the light came on and the noise started. Regarding oil leakage, I haven't spotted anything obvious, but then again, I haven't exactly been crawling under the car to check. Could oil viscosity be playing a role here?

Yup, the oil pressure gauge was normal, then BAM, warning light. No visible oil leakage for me either. In my case, it was indeed the oil pump. Seriously, get it checked ASAP, especially with those noises. Continuing to drive could mean catastrophic engine damage. Is it worth the risk? Find a trustworthy workshop!

Just wanted to say thanks for the heads up. Took it to a trusted mechanic, and you were spot on. Turns out it was oil pump failure. Had to replace it, along with some associated parts, plus an oil and filter change obviously. Cost me 755€. Ouch! Still, better than a completely ruined engine. Really appreciate the advice!
