Seat Altea Diesel Engine Stalling Problem Solved

I'm at my wit's end with my 2006 Seat Altea diesel. It's got 180220 km on the clock, and recently it's been a nightmare to start. The engine stalls at idle sometimes, and the check engine light is on. I suspect a defective camshaft sensor, maybe the encoder wheel on the camshafts is faulty. Has anyone experienced this?

That sounds familiar. I had a similar issue with my Seat Leon. The check engine light was on, and the engine would occasionally misfire. Have you checked the camshaft position sensor? It might be worth investigating.

Interesting. Was it a constant issue, or did it come and go? How did you diagnose it as the camshaft position sensor? Did you experience car stalling?

Yes, it was intermittent at first, then became more frequent. My mechanic diagnosed it using an OBD scanner which pointed to the camshaft position sensor. Since the check engine light was on and the symptoms matched, he suggested replacing it. If you suspect the sensor, have a workshop check it out; they can pinpoint the issue.

The camshaft sensor was indeed the problem. The encoder wheel on the camshafts had failed, messing with the ignition timing. Cost me 695€ to fix, but the car runs smoothly now. Hopefully, this helps someone else struggling with car stalling and a check engine light.
