Summary of the thread
The 2009 Seat Altea is experiencing a rain-light sensor fault, affecting automatic wiping, auto headlight control, speedometer dimming, and causing lights to switch on without input. The suspected cause is bubbles forming under the windshield's gel pad. The solution involved replacing the rain-light sensor, which resolved the issue.

Thanks for the input. When you say 'physical damage', do you mean obvious cracks or something more subtle? I've visually inspected it, but didn't see anything immediately apparent.

In my case, it wasn't immediately visible. The issue was internal to the auto sensor, causing it to malfunction. If you're not seeing anything obvious, it might be best to have it checked by a workshop with diagnostic tools.

The rain-light sensor was the problem. Bubbles under the gel pad caused the fault. The replacement was 62€.

I had a similar problem with my Seat Leon. It also manifested as an electrical fault affecting various auto sensors. Have you checked the sensor itself for any physical damage?
