Seat Arona gearbox issues

Alright, I'm officially stumped. My 2017 Seat Arona with a diesel engine is giving me serious grief. It's done 148131 km. The main problem is the gearbox – it's acting up big time. I can't shift with the paddle shifters, the gearbox slips and shifts really rough, and there's this awful grinding noise when it changes gears. Plus, the paddle shifters are super slow to respond, and sometimes the whole thing just goes into emergency mode. The error memory keeps throwing up errors, so I'm thinking it might be the transmission control unit. Anyone else had similar gearbox issues?

Summary of the thread

A 2017 Seat Arona with a diesel engine is experiencing significant gearbox issues, including rough shifting, grinding noises, and slow paddle shifter response, often entering emergency mode. The error codes suggest a problem with the transmission control unit. The recommended solution is to have a professional transmission diagnosis to confirm the issue before replacing the unit, which was ultimately identified as the defective component and is being replaced.

Sounds like a classic case of automotive ECU failure related to the automatic gearbox. Have you had the error codes read? Knowing those would help narrow down if it's definitely the transmission control unit or something else causing similar gearbox issues. Could be anything from a faulty sensor to low transmission fluid, though the paddle shifter issue points towards the car computer.

Yeah, the error codes are pointing towards the transmission control unit. Just wondering, is there any way to be absolutely sure before I shell out for a new one? I've heard these things can be a bit sensitive, and I don't want to replace it if it's something simpler.

If the error codes strongly indicate a defective transmission control unit and you're experiencing all those symptoms, it's highly likely that's the culprit. Given the shifting problems, emergency mode, and error codes, a faulty car computer is the most probable cause. I'd suggest getting a professional transmission diagnosis at a workshop to confirm before replacing it. They can run more in-depth tests.

Took it to the shop and you were spot on. The transmission control unit was indeed defective. They're replacing it, cost is around 1000€. Thanks again for your help!
