Seat Arona multifunction steering wheel dead
Summary of the thread
The multifunction steering wheel of a 2017 Seat Arona was completely non-functional. The garage identified an error in the vehicle's error memory, suggesting a cable connection issue in the steering wheel. This was confirmed as the likely cause due to the frequent flexing of wires within the steering column. The problem was resolved by replacing the faulty cable connection at a cost of 95€.

Vehicle diagnostics, yeah, that's what they called it. The exact error code? Err... I didn't write it down. Should I have? Could a faulty sensor cause this, or is it definitely a cable thing?

Okay, no worries about the code. Without it, we're guessing a bit. A faulty sensor could cause similar symptoms, but if the garage suspects a cable, that's a common issue with steering wheels. All those buttons and controls need wires, and they flex every time you turn the wheel. That flexing can lead to breaks. Given the symptoms and their diagnosis, a dodgy cable in the steering wheel is the most probable culprit. For 95€, it sounds like they're just replacing the cable, not the whole steering wheel or control module, which is good. Best to get it sorted at the workshop, as messing with the steering column yourself can be risky if you don't know what you're doing.

Yep, problem solved! The blokes at the workshop confirmed it was the cable connection in the steering wheel. They sorted it for 95€, exactly as predicted. Big thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

Sounds like a connectivity problem alright. The multifunction steering wheel relies on a bunch of signals being sent through the steering column to the car's control module. When you say error memory, was that from a vehicle diagnostics scan? If so, what was the specific error code? Knowing that could help narrow down if it's a sensor issue or something else entirely. It might be worth checking the wiring harness where it enters the steering column for any obvious damage before assuming the worst.
