Yeah, the cable that plugs directly into the NOx sensor. Give it a wiggle, see if anything changes. Honestly, NOx sensors can be finicky on any car, not just diesel engines. But if you are smelling exhaust I would take it to a workshop before you damage your catalytic converter.

Thanks for the advice. It turned out to be a defective plug connection, just like you suggested. The whole thing cost 95€ to fix.
