Refrigerant leak crossed my mind, but wouldn't that show? How would I check if the AC compressor is getting power?

A leak would eventually show, but a small one takes time. As for the power check, honestly, that's best left to someone with the right tools. If it's not the AC compressor itself, and the refrigerant levels are fine, then the control unit is a likely culprit. In your case, with the warning light and error code, I’d put money on the climate control unit. Best to get it checked by a workshop, it's tricky to fix yourself.

Garage confirmed it was the AC compressor and the control unit. Ended up costing 980€. Ouch.

Sounds familiar. I had a similar problem with my Seat Ibiza, same engine type. The AC stopped working, and there was some error code. Check for refrigerant leak before replacing the AC compressor. It's like patching a tire without finding the nail first. Is the AC compressor actually getting power?
