Seat Arosa rough engine problem

I'm having some trouble with my 2003 Seat Arosa, gasoline engine. The engine is running really rough, and it stalls sometimes when idling. Also, the check engine light is on and it jerks when accelerating. I suspect it might be a defective ignition coil or a problem with the ignition system in general, maybe even just a bad connection? I've read that a faulty cable or plug connection could be the culprit. Any ideas where to start with vehicle diagnostics?

Rough engine running could be a few things, but coil failure is definitely a possibility. I had similar symptoms on my old Renault Clio – jerking, stalling, the whole shebang. Have you checked the spark plugs? Those can cause similar issues too. It's probably worth ruling out the easy stuff first.

You mentioned checking the spark plugs. How would I go about doing that, and is there anything specific I should be looking for?

The spark plugs are fairly easy to check. You're looking for anything obvious – cracks, wear, or if they're covered in oil. But honestly, based on your symptoms and the mileage, a coil failure seems pretty likely. Could be a loose connection like you said. If you're not comfortable poking around, probably best to get it to a workshop for proper vehicle diagnostics. They can pinpoint the exact cylinder that's misfiring.

It was indeed the ignition coil. The cable to it was loose. The workshop charged me 95€ to fix it.
