Seat Ateca Diesel Automatic Gearbox Problems
Summary of the thread
A 2020 Seat Ateca diesel with 115,338 km is experiencing automatic gearbox issues, including non-functional paddle shifters, jerky gear changes, grinding noises, and emergency mode activation. An error code indicates a defective transmission control unit, which is likely the source of the problems. While a reset might help, a professional diagnosis confirmed the need for a replacement of the control unit to resolve the issues.

The error code points directly to the transmission control unit being defective. I did check the transmission fluid, and it seems to be at the correct level, although I couldn't really assess the condition myself. Is it possible that a simple reset of the control unit could solve it, or does it definitely sound like a replacement is needed?

Well, if the error code specifically mentions the transmission control, and the fluid level is fine, a reset might do something, but honestly, it sounds like the control unit is genuinely faulty. With the symptoms you're describing, and the error code pointing directly to the control unit, I'd say it's very probable that a replacement is the only real fix. Sadly, these electronic issues can be tricky, and attempting extensive self-repair on an automatic gearbox can sometimes make things worse. My advice would be to get a professional diagnosis from a reputable workshop, as it does sound like it requires expert attention for transmission repair. They'll confirm whether you definitely need a new transmission control module.

Thanks for sharing your experience. It seems this is beyond my limited skillset. I took it to a trusted mechanic, and they confirmed it's the transmission control unit. Looks like a costly transmission repair, about 1000€ including parts and labor, but at least I'll have it sorted soon. Hopefully, this fixes those awful grinding noises and gets me out of emergency mode.

Oh dear, that sounds like a proper headache! I had similar transmission problems with my old Volvo a while back, though it wasn't a Seat. The automatic gearbox started acting up in much the same way – slipping gears, slow response, and eventually, it refused to shift properly. Did the error memory mention anything specific about the transmission control module? It’s crucial to know if you have checked the transmission fluid level and condition, as that can sometimes cause similar symptoms before jumping to conclusions about electronic issues.
