Yeah, it was jerking quite a bit and sometimes felt like it was slipping. Grinding noises too! What exactly is converter failure and the lock-up clutch, and what did you do to fix it?

Sounds very similar to what I experienced. The lock-up clutch inside the torque converter probably failed. That would explain the slipping and the grinding. Unfortunately, you're probably looking at replacing or rebuilding the torque converter. It's not a small job. You need to get it checked by someone who knows automatic transmissions, and who can confirm the problem. I ended up taking mine to a transmission specialist.

Thanks a bunch! You were right. I took it to a workshop, and they confirmed torque converter failure. Ouch! It's costing me around 2120€ to get it sorted. At least I know what was wrong. Appreciate the help!

Sounds familiar. I had something similar happen with my Cordoba's automatic transmission. Check engine light and all. Was the car jerking a bit when shifting? If so, it could be the lock-up clutch in the torque converter acting up. Basically, the torque converter helps transfer power from the engine to the transmission. The lock-up clutch is supposed to create a more direct connection at certain speeds to improve efficiency.
