Seat Cordoba oil pressure issues

I am experiencing an issue with my 2001 Seat Cordoba, equipped with a gasoline engine. The vehicle has 50138 km. The oil pressure warning lamp illuminates, accompanied by loud mechanical noises emanating from the engine. Considering these symptoms, and having ruled out simple causes such as low oil level, I suspect a defect in the oil pump. Could this assessment be accurate, or should I consider other potential causes such as failing engine bearings?

Summary of the thread

A 2001 Seat Cordoba with a gasoline engine and 50138 km is experiencing oil pressure issues, indicated by a warning lamp and loud mechanical noises. The initial suspicion is a defect in the oil pump, although failing engine bearings are also considered. After ruling out simple causes like low oil level and oil leakage, a faulty oil pump is identified as the most likely cause. The issue is resolved by replacing the oil pump, oil filter, and performing an oil change, restoring normal oil pressure.

Low oil pressure on that engine usually points to a few suspects. Have you checked the oil level? Also, is the oil filter clogged? An oil change with the correct grade might help. Any signs of oil leakage?

The oil level is fine, and there's no visible oil leakage. I did an oil change recently, but the problem persists. How can I check if the oil filter is clogged or whether the oil pressure gauge is faulty?

Sounds like you've covered the basics. Given the noises and the warning light, a faulty oil pump is the most likely culprit. A clogged oil filter could contribute, but it wouldn't typically cause such a drastic pressure drop. The oil pressure gauge itself is less likely to fail. I'd recommend getting the oil pressure properly tested at a workshop to confirm, but be prepared for an oil pump replacement.

I appreciate the insight. I took it to a trusted mechanic, and you were spot on. The oil pump was indeed faulty. After replacement, including a new oil filter and oil change, the oil pressure is back to normal. Total damage: 755€. Thanks again for your help.
