Seat Cordoba Overheating Problem

Alright, petrolheads, I'm at my wit's end. My 2001 Seat Cordoba with a gasoline engine is playing up something fierce. The engine is overheating like crazy, and it's also taking ages to reach normal operating temperature. I reckon it's a defective map thermostat – from what I've read, that's usually the culprit. Before I go throwing money at it, has anyone else experienced this? I'm dreading a hefty repair bill (aiming for a sub 350€ outcome)!

When yours was doing this, did the temperature sensor on the dash also show higher than normal readings, or was it more subtle?
