Seat Cordoba rough running and smoking

Help! My 2001 Seat Cordoba with a diesel engine is driving me crazy! It has about 100045 km on it. The check engine light is on, power is way down, and it's smoking a lot when I accelerate. It runs really rough, uses a lot of fuel, and jerks when I accelerate. I'm even hearing a hissing sound. Could it be the EGR valve? I'm thinking it's stuck.

Sounds like the EGR valve. I had a similar problem with my Cordoba some time ago. Check engine light, rough running, the whole deal. Does it smell like fuel too?

Fuel smell as well? I haven't noticed that, but I'll check. What did you do to fix yours? Did you try cleaning it?

Fuel smell can be a symptom. I didn't try to clean it myself. I'm not that confident with car repair and emission stuff. I took it to a workshop. They confirmed it was the EGR valve. If it's that bad, you probably have a vacuum leak. It's best to get it checked properly, especially with those engines needing to pass strict vehicle emissions tests.

Just wanted to say it was the EGR valve, like you suggested. Cost 355€ to fix it. Thanks for the assistance!
