Heating element? Where is that located, and is it easy to check without special tools?

Sounds like the same issue I experienced. I tried fixing it myself but made it worse. I suggest taking it to a workshop. They'll diagnose it properly. It could be a faulty control unit, especially if you're getting smoke. It's better to be safe and prevent future issues with the diesel engine and cold starts.

You saved me! It was a defective control unit and a faulty plug connection. 95€ later, the Exeo is running smoothly. Thanks!

I had a similar issue with my Exeo. The preheating light stayed on, and the vehicle felt like it was stalling, especially when the diesel engine was cold. Did you check the heating element itself? It could be that.
