Seat Exeo Diesel Oil Pressure Warning

I'm getting worried. The oil pressure warning lamp keeps lighting up on my 2009 Seat Exeo diesel. I checked the oil, and it seems contaminated. Could this be from exceeding the maintenance interval? There is a warning light in the speedometer. Any ideas?

Summary of the thread

The oil pressure warning light on a 2009 Seat Exeo diesel is a concern, potentially caused by contaminated oil, possibly due to exceeding the maintenance interval. The oil appears dark, indicating degradation and possible sludge formation, which can clog oil passages and restrict flow, risking engine damage. Immediate inspection by a mechanic is advised, with an oil change and new filter potentially resolving the issue if addressed promptly.

The oil pressure warning lamp illuminating is certainly cause for concern. The contamination you describe could stem from several issues, though exceeding the maintenance interval is a prime suspect. What does the oil color appear to be? Does it look milky, or excessively dark, and does it have an acrid smell? I experienced a similar issue with my previous Vauxhall Insignia, although the root cause was slightly different. Ignoring this could lead to catastrophic engine damage due to oil sludge accumulation.

Thanks for the quick response. The oil color is really dark, almost black. What do you mean by 'oil sludge accumulation'? Is that a serious problem?

Indeed, dark or black oil indicates significant degradation and potential contamination. 'Oil sludge' refers to a thick, tar-like substance that forms when oil breaks down due to heat, oxidation, and contaminants. This sludge can clog oil passages, restricting oil flow to critical engine components, and greatly increases friction. Given your symptoms and the oil color, I would strongly advise against driving the Exeo any further until it's been inspected by a qualified mechanic. Continuing to drive it could result in irreversible engine damage. An oil change and new oil filter might resolve the issue if caught early, but a thorough inspection is crucial.

I took the Exeo to the shop, and you were spot on. The oil change, new oil filter, and cleaning everything out cost me 165€. Hopefully, that's the end of it. Thanks for your help!
