On the BMW, it turned out the preheating unit was the defective part. A multimeter helped diagnose the electrical fault and confirm the preheating unit wasn't getting the correct signals. Given your visual inspection, I'd say a trip to a workshop with diagnostic equipment might be your best bet. They can pinpoint the issue precisely and avoid you chasing ghosts.

Took it to a workshop, and you were spot on. It was the preheating unit and its cable connection. New part and labor cost me 95€. Thanks for the help and pointing me in the right direction.

Sounds familiar. Had a similar headache with my old BMW 3 Series. Same symptoms: preheating lamp going nuts and the check engine light popping on. Electrical faults can be a real pain. Have you checked the glow plugs themselves? Sometimes they short out and can cause the control unit to act up.
