Seat Formentor Engine Noise

I'm starting to get seriously annoyed with my 2021 Seat Formentor (gasoline engine). It's got almost 100000 km on it and recently developed this awful engine noise. It sounds like a bad belt tensioner, but I'm not 100% sure. The belt-handover no longer works properly. I suspect the belt bringer/handover itself is defective. Has anyone experienced something similar? Any ideas before I throw money at it?

I also own a Seat Formentor and had similar symptoms not long ago. I would suggest checking the tensioner pulley, especially if you hear a belt squeal. Is the timing belt itself okay? The idler pulley might also be the culprit.

Thanks for the quick reply! When you had the issue, was it a constant noise, or only at certain RPMs? And did you replace the entire tensioner assembly, or just the pulley?

In my case, the noise was more pronounced at lower RPMs. The workshop advised replacing the entire tensioner assembly, which resolved the issue. It is prudent to address this promptly to avert potential complications.

Took it to the workshop, and you were spot on. It was indeed the belt tensioner. The belt-handover was completely shot. Cost me 455€, but at least the horrible engine noise is gone. Thanks for the help!
