Seat Ibiza engine issues
Summary of the thread
A 2009 Seat Ibiza with a diesel engine is experiencing reduced power, a check engine light, smoke during acceleration, rough running, increased fuel consumption, jerking, and a loud hissing sound. These symptoms suggest a potential issue with the EGR valve. A professional diagnosis is recommended to confirm the problem and check for vacuum leaks or a clogged catalytic converter. Ultimately, replacing the defective EGR valve resolved the issues, restoring the car's performance.

Thanks for the quick reply! Yes, it jerks when I accelerate, and there's a loud hissing noise. How can I check the vacuum leak and catalytic converter myself, or should I get a professional?

The jerking and hissing point to a possible EGR valve issue, especially with the other symptoms. Checking the vacuum leak and catalytic converter is best left to a professional if you're not comfortable. Vacuum leaks are tricky to find without the right tools, and checking the catalytic converter needs specialized equipment. Since you're experiencing these symptoms, it's likely more than a minor issue. I'd recommend a trusted workshop for proper diagnosis. It sounds like the EGR valve, and fixing it will help your vehicle emissions and overall engine performance.

Just a quick note. The workshop visit confirmed the EGR valve was the problem. Replacement sorted it, and the car runs great now. Cost was 355€ Thanks for the assistance.

I had similar issues with my Ibiza, though a different year. Reduced power, check engine light, the works. Does it jerk when you accelerate? I suspect a jammed or defective EGR valve. It's common. Have you checked for vacuum leaks around the engine bay? Also, when was the catalytic converter last checked? A clogged one can strain the EGR system.
