Seat Ibiza fuel pump issue

I'm at my wit's end with my 2001 Seat Ibiza! It has a gasoline engine. I suspect the fuel pump is defective, but I'm not sure. The engine won't start sometimes, and when it does, it stalls at idle. The check engine light is also on, and the engine runs really rough. I've also noticed higher fuel consumption lately. I even read the error memory, and it shows some kind of fuel system error. Could this really be a pump failure? Any ideas?

Summary of the thread

The 2001 Seat Ibiza experienced issues such as intermittent starting, stalling at idle, rough engine running, and increased fuel consumption, with a check engine light indicating a fuel system error. Initially suspected to be a fuel pump failure, the problem was identified as a defective electrical connection to the fuel pump. Repairing the connection resolved the issues, restoring the car's performance.

I am familiar with this issue. I drive a Seat Ibiza as well, though I won't bore you with the year. A similar problem occurred, and the symptoms were quite alike. Before you jump to conclusions about the fuel pump itself, have you inspected the electrical connections? By this I mean, have you checked the cable and plug that connect to the fuel pump? A faulty connection there can mimic the symptoms of a complete pump failure.

That's interesting! I wouldn't have thought of that. How exactly did you check the connection? Is there anything specific I should be looking for? I'm not exactly an expert with car mechanics, but I'm willing to give it a shot before replacing the whole fuel pump.

Indeed, a loose or corroded connection can cause all sorts of havoc. I had similar symptoms including the check engine light, rough engine running and higher fuel consumption. If you lack the necessary tools and expertise for more involved auto repair, I would advise you to consult a workshop to inspect the fuel system.

I took your advice and brought my Ibiza to the car mechanics. Turns out you were right! It was indeed a defective connection. They charged me 95€, and now it runs like new again. Thanks a bunch for your help!
