Seat Ibiza NOx Catalyst Aging Issue

Alright, petrolheads, I'm at my wit's end! My 2008 Seat Ibiza with a gasoline engine is giving me fits. The check engine light is on, and the error memory is screaming about NOx storage catalyst aging. Mileage is at 163859 km. I've noticed a slight exhaust leak, and I'm suspecting that might be the culprit. Could a simple leak in the exhaust system really mess with the nitrogen oxides levels and trigger this? Anyone else experienced something similar with these engines? It is driving me nuts, and affecting air quality so I want to fix it ASAP!

Check your exhaust system for leaks. I had a similar issue with my Ibiza, though I can't remember the exact fault code. A small leak near the NOx catalyst can throw everything off. Is your fuel efficiency impacted?

Interesting. Where exactly was the leak in your exhaust system? And did you notice any difference in your fuel efficiency before and after the repair? Just trying to narrow down possibilities before I start poking around.

Yeah, it was a tiny crack near one of the joints in the exhaust system, close to the NOx catalyst. I think it messes with the oxygen sensors readings, which then throws off the whole NOx reduction process. Fuel efficiency was down maybe 10-15%. I'd get it checked by a professional if I were you, those exhaust leaks can be tricky to find.

Huge thanks for the insight! I took it to a workshop, and you were spot on. Exhaust system leak, right near the NOx catalyst. They quoted me 265€ for the repair. A bit steep, but better than a failed emissions test. Car runs like new again, hopefully my fuel efficiency will get better and no more check engine light!
