Seat Inca automatic transmission fault

I'm hoping someone can shed some light on a frustrating issue I'm having with my 2002 Seat Inca with a gasoline engine. It has around 79423 km on the clock. The automatic transmission seems to have developed a fault in the parking position. The engine won't start, the check engine light is constantly on, and the gearbox is shifting really roughly. I've also scanned for error codes, and there's definitely something stored in the memory. Someone suggested it could be a defective control unit, but I'm not sure where to start. Could this also be linked to the park brake or shift lock? Any advice would be greatly appreciated, as I'm dreading a hefty repair bill!

Sounds familiar. I had similar transmission issues with my Inca a while back. Check engine light, slipping gears, the whole shebang. The transmission sensor might be the culprit, but it could also be related to the gear linkage. Have you checked the transmission fluid level?

Thanks for the reply! I haven't checked the transmission fluid level yet. Where exactly is the transmission sensor located, and is it something I could potentially replace myself? Also, you mentioned the gear linkage - what should I be looking for there?

Yeah, sounds like exactly what happened to mine. Replacing the sensor might fix it, but if the control unit is indeed faulty, you're probably better off taking it to a workshop. They'll be able to diagnose it properly and replace the unit if needed. It's not a cheap fix, but messing with the transmission without proper knowledge can cause more harm than good.

You were spot on! I took it to a local garage, and they confirmed the control unit was indeed faulty. They've replaced it, and it seems to have sorted out all the transmission issues. Cost me around 1000€, a painful hit to the wallet, but at least my Inca is running smoothly again. Massive thanks for your help!
