Seat Inca Diesel engine issue

Alright so my 2002 Seat Inca diesel van is playing up. The check engine light is on. I've noticed it's lost some power, and there's some smoke coming out when I accelerate. It's done 99067 km. I'm thinking it might be the crankcase ventilation valve, but I'm not 100% sure. Anyone experienced anything similar?

The symptoms you describe are consistent with a crankcase ventilation malfunction. I had a similar issue with my BMW a while back. The increased pressure within the crankcase can cause oil leaks and contribute to poor engine performance. Was the idle also rough or unstable?

Thanks for the quick reply! The idle does seem a bit off now that you mention it, fluctuating slightly. What exactly does the crankcase ventilation do and why would it cause these problems?

Affirmative, the rough idle is further indication. The crankcase ventilation system's function is to vent gases produced within the engine's crankcase back into the intake manifold to be burned, reducing emissions. If it malfunctions, pressure builds up, hence the smoke. It's advisable to have it checked professionally; prolonged operation with a defective ventilation system can lead to further engine issues.

Just wanted to say thanks. Took it to a garage, and they confirmed the crankcase ventilation was the culprit. Cost me 360€, but the van is running smoothly again.
