Seat Inca Diesel Running Rich

I'm having some trouble with my 2000 Seat Inca, diesel engine. It feels like it's running way too rich. I'm getting reduced power, the check engine light is on, and the engine is running rough. Fuel economy has gone to pot, and it's jerking when I try to accelerate. I've checked the air filter and spark plugs, but they seem okay. Could a bad catalytic converter cause this, or should I be looking at something else?

Excessive fuel consumption and rough running can be attributed to several things. Have you inspected the oxygen sensor? A malfunctioning sensor can cause the engine control unit to miscalculate the air-fuel mixture. I experienced similar symptoms in my Inca. Did you check the injectors?

Oxygen sensor seemed fine when I checked it, but I didn't really focus on the injectors. What kind of issues did you have? Was it obvious, or did it take some digging to figure out?

In my case, the symptoms were practically identical. The engine was receiving too much fuel, leading to incomplete combustion. While a faulty oxygen sensor or catalytic converter can contribute, the jerking under acceleration strongly suggests an injector issue. Given the symptoms, I would recommend having a workshop perform a diagnostic test on the injectors to ascertain their functionality.

The workshop confirmed it was the injectors. Replacing them set me back 515€, but the Inca is running smoothly now. Thanks for the advice!
