Seat Inca engine problems

Alright, mechanics, need your wisdom! My 2001 Seat Inca, gasoline engine, is driving me nuts. Mileage is at 182231 km. The check engine light is on, fuel economy is crap, it stalls at idle, and puffs out smoke when I accelerate! Suspect the LMM (Mass air flow meter) is buggered, messing with the air-fuel ratio. Any thoughts before I throw money at it?

Sounds familiar. I had similar issues with my old Volvo – higher fuel consumption, stalling, check engine light, the works. Turned out to be the MAF sensor in my case too. Have you checked for any obvious air leaks in the air intake system?

Air leaks, you say? Where exactly should I be looking? Never messed with the air intake before...

Yeah, check around where the air intake connects to the MAF sensor and then to the throttle body. Any cracks or loose connections. But honestly, if you're seeing smoke, stalling, and the check engine light is on, and you suspect the MAF, it's probably the sensor itself. I'd get it checked at a workshop, they have diagnostic tools to confirm it.

Just got the Inca back. It was indeed the MAF sensor. New one fitted, cost me 365€ including labor. Runs like a champ now, no smoke, and the fuel economy is already improving! Thanks for the heads-up!
