Seat Leon cylinder pressure issue

I have a 2002 Seat Leon with a diesel engine and I've recently encountered a troubling cylinder pressure fluctuation. The symptoms are classic: higher fuel consumption, a noticeable reduction in engine power, and the check engine light is on. I am completely lost. Could this be somehow related to the crankshaft?

Whoa, that sounds rough! I had a similar issue with my Seat Leon, though mine's a bit newer. I noticed higher fuel consumption and the engine felt like it was struggling, especially uphill. I also got the check engine light. Have you checked the basics like spark plugs and the camshaft position sensor? For me, it felt like the engine was knocking sometimes, which was super unsettling. It could also be something with the head gasket, but I'm no expert.

That's incredibly insightful! You wouldn't happen to remember what ended up being the culprit in your case? I've already checked the spark plugs, and they seem fine. The engine knocking is intermittent, making it harder to diagnose. I'm trying to avoid a costly teardown if it's something relatively simple.

Okay, so for me, it turned out to be a faulty sensor causing all sorts of mayhem. The weird thing was, the cylinder pressure issue was actually a consequence of the initial sensor malfunction. I'd strongly suggest getting it hooked up to a proper diagnostic tool at a workshop. They should be able to pinpoint the root cause, rather than just chasing the symptoms like the cylinder pressure. I really hope this help!

I sincerely appreciate you sharing your experience. Based on your recommendation, I went to the workshop. It turned out that the cylinder pressure fluctuation was indeed a consequential error. The diagnostic tool didn’t show the main error, so they started inspecting everything. After a while, they found a faulty sensor, which was causing all the issues. They replaced it and the car is as good as new. Repair cost: 0€ because it was a faulty sensor and still under warranty!
