Seat Leon Diesel Battery Discharge Issue

I am writing to describe an issue I'm experiencing with my 2002 Seat Leon, diesel engine, with approximately 71900 km. I am observing a heavy vehicle battery discharge. The symptoms include an error message displayed within the speedometer, weak and/or flickering lights, and difficulty starting the engine, particularly after the vehicle has been stationary for a prolonged duration. Furthermore, an error is stored in the error memory relating to 'excessive vehicle battery discharge'. I suspect a defective battery sensor. I'm seeking advice before potentially incurring expenses. Any insights regarding this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Summary of the thread

A 2002 Seat Leon diesel is experiencing heavy battery discharge, indicated by error messages, flickering lights, and starting difficulties. The suspected cause is a defective battery sensor, which aligns with stored error messages about excessive battery discharge. After considering potential causes like parasitic drain, the issue was resolved by replacing the battery sensor, restoring normal vehicle function.

That does sound frustrating. I had a similar issue with my older Volvo, albeit a different make. The symptoms you describe – error messages, flickering lights, difficulty starting – are very similar to what I experienced. Has the vehicle battery been tested under load? Have you observed any parasitic battery drain?

Thank you for your response. You mentioned a parasitic battery drain. Could you elaborate on how that was diagnosed and what the root cause was in your case? I have checked basic things such as lights being off etc. but I am not sure how to identify a significant parasitic drain.

In my case, after a lot of head-scratching, the Volvo workshop discovered a faulty module in the electrical system that was not shutting down properly, causing a persistent battery drain. It seems quite a complex problem to diagnose without the correct equipment and expertise. It might be worth having a workshop check it out if you're not sure as electrical issues are difficult to pinpoint.

I appreciate you sharing your experience. Your input affirmed my suspicion. It was indeed the battery sensor. Replacement set me back 315€. Now, everything appears to be functioning correctly. Thanks again for the help.
